Message from the President

Shardé Skahan

BWL President : 2024-2025

Allow me to introduce myself. I am an Employment Law Partner at Seyfarth Shaw in Century City. My practice focuses on employment litigation and counseling, spanning a wide array of issues. I particularly enjoy partnering with employers to identify practical business solutions for the ever-changing complex employment law landscape. A particular focus of my practice is advising on pay equity, including audits, pay transparency, and pay reporting. I have been honored to be recognized as a Top 40 Under 40 Nation’s Best Advocate by the National Bar Association.

I am a Minnesota native who has made a home in Los Angeles since graduating from law school. I joined BWL shortly after moving to Los Angeles, and have dedicated my time to the organization ever since.

My theme, “Architects Of Progress: Shaping The Future And Honoring Our Legacy Through Service And Leadership” recognizes those who have built the path for future generations of Black women lawyers. It also recognizes our ability to empower and guide others.

Reflecting on BWL’s growth from its inception in 1975, the founders and past leaders created and grew an organization to champion our successes, challenge the status quo, and insist on a brighter future. This year, our goal is to support the pipeline of future lawyers, from grade school to law school. Supporting the pipeline starts early with messages communicated to elementary, middle, and high school students. Therefore, as part of our community activities this year, we look forward to including younger members of our community.
