On April 21, 2023, BWL was honored with an Affiliate of the Year Award from the California Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) in recognition of outstanding and dedicated service to the community and CABL. The award was presented by CABL President Shumika T.R. Sookdeo to BWL President Jasmine S. Horton during the President’s Reception at CABL’s Annual Convention in downtown Los Angeles. The honor was shared with BWL Past Presidents, Board Members, General Members and Sponsors.

On December 16, 2022, BWL and John M. Langston Bar Association co-hosted their Annual Holiday Party and Toy Drive at the beautiful residence of Past President Carla Pitman and Alvin Pitman. The evening was well-attended and festive with a hosted bar, large outdoor Christmas tree, dancing with DJ Paradise, desserts, custom photobooth, and taco bar. Over 100 donated toys were collected. During the evening, BWL presented Past President Shirley Henderson with a painting by Errol Cook, Esq. depicting the historic BWL group photo on the stairs. A special thank you to co-chairs Taisha Brown and Tatianna Metters.

This year our Annual Thanksgiving Eve Cocktail Sip Fundraiser returned to Cicada Restaurant & Lounge in Downtown LA on November 23, 2022.
The theme was “Harlem Nights” and many attendees came dressed to impress. The Moody Brothers and DJ R-Tistic provided non-stop music while Sahara Nights created a fun, casino gaming experience. Co-chairs Heather Horn and Holly Parker along with their Sip committee worked tirelessly to make the evening memorable and fun while raising funds to support the 2022-23 BWL Board agenda.

The 2022 BWL Installation was an elegant celebration of BWL’s legacy and another successful bar year. The event took place at the California Club in downtown Los Angeles and the room was vibrant and full of energy. The Black Women Lawyers 46th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser and Awards Ceremony, took place June 4th, 2022 at the Beverly Hilton. The theme was Amplifying Black Voices. Honorees included Prentice Penny, Executive Producer and Showrunner of Insecure; Karen Grant- Selma, SVP, Business and Legal Affairs, The Oprah Winfrey Network; and California Black Women’s Health Project. Four scholarships were given this year to law school students. Recipients attended the event. The fundraiser was a success as the monetary goal was exceeded.

Panelists Nicole Hancock Husband, Vice President, Human Resources Warner Bros. Television, and Traci Blackburn, Head Deputy Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office, presented a workshop to demystify legal interviews and provide insight on how employers in the public and private legal sectors make hiring decisions. Attendees learned how to distinguish themselves in a competitive job market to land the job and scholarship opportunities they desire.
